Welcome to Columbia Kindergarten!  Each child is unique in growth and development and each comes to school with a different set of experiences.  The kindergarten program at Columbia accepts the child at his/her level of development and provides a learning environment which enables the child to practice the familiar, learn new skills, gain independence, and grow in self-confidence.

A Place Where Every Child Is Loved

An empathetic classroom community is built through having shared discussions about classroom ethics:

·  How do we treat each other?

·  How do we show we care about each other?

·  How can we help each other?

Learning Through Play

·  Play is a very important part of kindergarten.

·  Children learn important skills through play:

Social skills, problem solving, cooperation and teamwork, and many others.

Hands-On Learning

·  Children learn through hands-on exploration.

·  Learning is fun, exciting, and meaningful to the child.

A Thematic Classroom

Children learn more about a chosen topic through a variety of ways:

·  Singing songs, reading books, writing projects,  investigating,  sharing ideas,  art projects, math activities and more!

An Individualized Learning Environment

·  Instruction is focused on the needs of the individual child.

·  Instruction is taught through a variety of methods (learning styles).

Learning Fundamentals

·  Children need a solid foundation in basic skills.

·  Children learn letter recognition and letter/sound relationships, which enable them to become readers and writers.

·  Children learn basic mathematical skills that enable them to become mathematicians.

·  Children learn basic social skills through discussion and practice.
